Strong Acid Titration Lab: Add Base and Track pH

Titrate a strong monoprotic acid with a strong base at 25 °C. Compare excess amounts, pH, and the equivalence volume.

About 8 minutes.

How does it work?

  1. Change a control to update the table and diagram.
  2. Open a preset to compare settings, then try the challenges.

What will you get?

Compare the model’s outputs, explore its presets, and check two challenges.

What does the model assume?

  • The acid supplies one proton per molecule and the base supplies one hydroxide ion per formula unit. Both dissociate completely.
  • The temperature is fixed at 25 °C, and Kw = 1.0 × 10⁻¹⁴. Water dissociation is included even in dilute mixtures.
  • Volumes add. Concentrations approximate activities; the model neglects activity corrections and heat released during mixing.
  • Neutralization is one-to-one. Equivalence means equal amounts in moles, and the pH there is 7 under these assumptions.
  • This is a mathematical model, not a procedure for handling chemicals.

Solid line: pH. Circle: current mixture. Square: equivalence.

The current mixture has pH 1.368 at 10 mL added. Equivalence is at 25 mL and pH 7.

Can you reach these targets?

Keep 25 mL of 0.100 mol/L acid and use 0.100 mol/L base. Add enough base to reach pH 7.

  • Target: Acid volume = 25 mL; tolerance 0 mL.
  • Target: Acid concentration = 0.1 mol/L; tolerance 0 mol/L.
  • Target: Base concentration = 0.1 mol/L; tolerance 0 mol/L.
  • Target: pH = 7 ; tolerance 0.01 .

Keep the same acid and base concentrations and 25 mL of acid. Find a base volume that gives pH 12.52, within 0.02.

  • Target: Acid volume = 25 mL; tolerance 0 mL.
  • Target: Acid concentration = 0.1 mol/L; tolerance 0 mol/L.
  • Target: Base concentration = 0.1 mol/L; tolerance 0 mol/L.
  • Target: pH = 12.52 ; tolerance 0.02 .
